Digital tools in forestry education

The aim of the project is to update and develop REDU’s forest learning environments with new technology and thereby strengthen the development of students’ competence and meet the goals of the green transition and future skills needs by developing cooperation between REDU, Lapland University of Applied Sciences and forest companies.

The concrete results of the project for Lapland University of Applied Sciences will be the outputs of four work packages.

The first work package will implement an extended (XR) and augmented reality (AR) forestry learning environment, the second will develop intelligent robotics-based small loaders to support the learning environment, the third will further develop and diversify the simulation environment by building a remote control system for the driver’s work. Future skills needs arise from the factory investments of forest sector operators in Northern Finland and the changes caused by peat sector entrepreneurs and other operators in the peat sector. The aim of the project is to build a learning environment that would serve future professionals. The focus of the development is on developing skills and opening up new types of employment opportunities, as well as responding to local and regional workforce needs.

The project outputs are physically available and will be utilized as part of the training in the field. REDU’s cooperation with Lapland University of Applied Sciences will also be improved in the development of the work packages.
