The specialization possibilities for an information and communication technology engineer are truly diverse: software development and design, cybersecurity, cloud services and IT infrastructure, embedded systems and IoT, data analytics, telecommunications and networks, game development and versatile project management and much more. There are jobs for engineers not only in software companies, but everywhere else too.
What would interest you? Frontend, backend, or would you like to touch more hardware?
Some examples of job descriptions after graduation:
There are a huge number of IT jobs in both the public and private sectors. For example, IT departments of large companies, public administrations and organizations, private software and other companies, startups and projects are looking for a wide variety of IT roles. Technology is developing and the world is constantly digitizing, which is why the IT sector is growing and the need for expertise is adapting to the development.
What could an engineering internship involve for me? In companies and the public sector, work tasks can include concrete design and implementation of solutions, documentation, testing, configuration and all the right practical things. By participating in projects, you usually get hands-on-experience and create real-life technology solutions planned in the projects. The nature of the internship often depends a lot on where you would like to develop yourself.
Your own interests also influence the choice of thesis topic. Often, the thesis is done in an internship and it also very often leads to employment. Choosing an internship location and thesis topic is the student’s own responsibility.
Current internships in Rovaniemi are sometimes announced on the Tech Cafe -Teams channel, so remember to follow the channel actively. When looking for an internship, prioritize local companies and public organizations – FrostBit should not be the first and especially not the only place to apply.
Summer game studies are a joint study package between Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland, which have been organized for several years. During the summer, students complete 20 credits working on a game project and receive an excellent reference for their own skills. This is worth experiencing – both for engineering students and students from other fields! Learn more about the studies below and enjoy previous end-of-season streams.
Once you start your studies, you will be added to the Tech Cafe team in Microsoft Teams. The channels will provide you with information about current events at TVT, mentoring seminars, internships and tech help! Install Teams on your computer and/or phone, as it will also be the easiest way to contact teachers and FrostBit staff.
In recent years, Rovaniemi has been actively organizing Game Jams again, and the development of the gaming industry is being boosted in Lapland in many ways. The game development hub is organized in particular by the gaming industry association IGDA, which has its own local hub in Rovaniemi, i.e. IGDARovaniemi.
So what are Game Jams? They are usually weekend-long events where developers get together and make a game individually or in teams. The games can be PC games, console games, board games – the sky is the limit. Jams are a great opportunity for students to come and learn programming or other aspects of game development, and have fun with a group.
FrostBit, together with IGDA, usually organizes Frosted Game Jams and Global Game Jams once a year. Frosteds are held in the fall (September-November) and GGJs are held in January-February. The events are announced on FrostBit’s website, social media and in the Discord of Lapland Game Developers.
