FREQUENTLY ASKED

What does the Jam offer me?
– A place to jam for the weekend, good company, a little program, coffee/tea, sauna and pizza
– Only some loan equipment (cables, mice, keyboards, drawing boards, monitors)

What does the event not offer for participant?
– Loan computers or headphones

What should you bring to the Jam?
– Your own computer and monitor
– Your own headphones, extension cord, mouse and keyboard (remember to name tag them!)
– If you are a board game player, we recommend to bring some of your own craft supplies
– Your own towel, drinking bottle, enough snacks and food

I would like to come to the jam, but I don’t have a team?
– In the registration form we ask about your skills, which can help you be placed in other teams that are looking for creators. Those looking for a team can also create their own team if the other teams are full.
– We also recommend looking for a team in advance on the Lapland Game Developers Discord, where there is a dedicated channel for jams!

Can I come to the event even if I don’t know how to code?
– In addition to coding, game development includes design, modeling, graphics, voice acting and much more. You can also make board games at the Jam!

Are these international Jams – can I join as an international student?
– Frosted Game Jams are a local event in Rovaniemi, and the hosting speeches during the program are only in Finnish. However international students are of course welcome and we will inform/debrief you afterwards in English! 🤗 (There are also English info sheets in the event).

Can I participate remotely?

– Remote participation is not possible in this local event. The Global Game Jam held early in the year are hosted internationally and have a remote participation option.

Why doesn’t the event provide hardware for everyone?
– The event is organized by a few FrostBit lab staff, and unfortunately, the functionality of the classroom computers can never be guaranteed on the Jam network. Technical problems take up too many resources from the organizers and have extended the start time of the event for participants.
– Unfortunately, FrostBit Lab does not have all kind of technical equipment to lend to each participant. For hygiene reasons, we always recommend bringing your own headphones. (We don’t have extras in the lab, only the workers’ own. 😔)

WHAT ARE GAME JAMS?

Game jams are short, usually a couple of days long events where the goal is to make a game that fits the theme of the Jam. The game can be anything from a board game to a VR game, and there are really no restrictions! Anyone interested in game development (and over 18 years old) is welcome to participate in the jams. Frosted Game Jams have been organized four times before.

Previous themes have been:
2024: Unexpected Resource
2023: Chain Reaction
2022 Fall: In the Middle
2022 Spring: Nothing at the Beginning

In addition to the main theme, there are “diversifiers” which are additional themes for adding some extra spice to the games.

WILL OUR GAMES BE UPLOADED SOMEWHERE?

During the closing ceremony of the event (with your permission), we will collect the completed builds, which will be played in the Jam “After-party” organized by the IGDA Rovaniemi Hub. In addition, we will use screenshots and video recordings of the games (with your permission) in the event’s aftermovie videos.

We also recommend uploading the completed games to, for example, itch.io, where everyone can enjoy them! Games can and should be marketed, for example, on the Lapland Game Developers Discord.
